At HESTA, we’re committed to improving the financial futures of our members. As we continue to strengthen our Financial Crime capability, we’re seeking an experienced and strategic leader to shape, lead and evolve our enterprise-wide approach to fraud, scams and financial crime prevention.

 

This is a pivotal leadership opportunity to drive HESTA’s Financial Crime Strategy and Operations team, overseeing the prevention, detection and response to fraud, scams, AML/CTF, sanctions and broader financial crime risks. You’ll combine strategic vision with operational excellence, leading a high-performing team while partnering across the business, regulators and key service providers to protect our members and strengthen HESTA’s financial crime resilience.

 

As HESTA’s appointed AML Compliance Officer (AMLCO), you’ll play a critical role in ensuring compliance with Australia’s evolving financial crime regulatory landscape while driving innovation, intelligence-led decision making and future-focused capabilities, including AI-enabled financial crime solutions.

 

What You’ll Do

 

Lead and Inspire

  • Manage, coach and develop a team of financial crime specialists.
  • Build a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Act as trusted advisor/subject matter expert across fraud, scams, AML/CTF, sanctions and emerging financial crime threats.
  • Lead major financial crime incidents and stakeholder escalations.

 

Shape Strategy

  • Own and evolve HESTA’s Financial Crime Framework, AML/CTF Program and multi-year Financial Crime Roadmap.
  • Develop risk-based strategies, policies and operating models that balance member protection, regulatory compliance and business outcomes.
  • Drive financial crime transformation initiatives, including AI and advanced analytics capabilities.
  • Partner with senior leadership, executives and the Board to define financial crime risk appetite and oversight.

 

Drive Operational Excellence

  • Oversee end-to-end financial crime operations, including transaction monitoring, investigations, KYC/CDD, EDD and sanctions screening.
  • Enhance detection capabilities, intelligence processes and response frameworks to address emerging threats.
  • Ensure compliance with AUSTRAC obligations and alignment with APRA and ASIC expectations.
  • Lead regulatory engagement and reporting activities where required.

 

Influence Through Intelligence

  • Leverage data, analytics and insights to identify emerging threats, strengthen controls and drive informed decision making.
  • Deliver meaningful reporting and strategic insights to Executive Leadership and Board Committees.
  • Support complex investigations and root cause analysis to continuously improve financial crime controls and outcomes.

 

Vendor Management and Strategic Partnerships

  • Foster strong relationships across HESTA, regulators, industry bodies and key third-party providers, including our Administrator.
  • Drive accountability, performance and continuous improvement across third-party financial crime services.
  • Provide thought leadership and expertise in internal and external industry forums to share key learnings and insights.

 

What You’ll Bring

 

  • Extensive leadership experience in financial crime, fraud risk management and AML/CTF within superannuation or financial services.
  • Deep expertise across financial crime strategy, operations, governance and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven experience leading high-performing teams and complex cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of AUSTRAC, AML/CTF obligations, sanctions, fraud and scam prevention frameworks.
  • Experience working with third-party providers and managing outsourced operational models.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the credibility to partner effectively with Executives, Board, Regulators and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical capability with the ability to translate complex data and intelligence into actionable insights and strategic outcomes.
  • Experience leveraging technology, data, analytics and AI to enhance financial crime prevention and detection.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in business, finance, risk, law, technology or a related discipline.
  • ACAMS or other recognised financial crime qualifications highly regarded.
